Books of 2020 #5 – Pharos

I finished Pharos by Guy Haley back in February. It is the 34th Volume of the Horus Heresy series published by the Black Library.

It can be purchased on Amazon here:

Or directly from the Black Library here:

One of the great strengths of the Horus Heresy series is also it’s biggest weakness. By allowing so many authors to contribute – you get a variety of voices and creative ideas. Unfortunately you also get uneven quality. Some of these books are gripping and suck you in. Some of them are mediocre and a few are downright work to get through.

Fortunately – Pharos is a good one. It’s not quite up to the level of some of Dan Abnett’s work, but Guy Haley is better than most of the folks who contribute to the series.

Pharos continues the story arc of Imperium Secundus. Three of my favorite characters (Dantioch, Corvo, and Pollux) are featured.

Without giving any spoilers away, I am happy with how the story turns out for Pollux and Dantioch. If you enjoy those characters you will find the ending to be fitting and appropriate.

My only real gripe with the story are how the Night Lords feature. I had a hard time reading some of the descriptions of what they do. I know it’s the Night Lords and all so it is expected. It was uncomfortable. They also were not written with the same depth of character as the “heroes” of the story. Between the violence and lack of depth – they came off a bit cartoonish.

I recommend this novel.
